This is an article I wrote for my school. We are supposed to read and summarize a news item related to science every week.

SETI, or search for extraterrestrial intelligence, is an organization that looks for signs of intelligent life in outer space. SETI uses dish antennas that monitor radiation signals as one of the ways to look for intelligent life deep in space. In 2015, using SETI dishes, scientists detected high frequency waves coming from the direction of a sun-like star with one planet orbiting it. Scientists aren’t sure if the signal was from extraterrestrial life but they wanted to investigate. However, they are sure that the waves weren’t from a random noise because of their strength. Based on the signals, the “aliens” would have to create 1 quintillion watts of power to send it out in all directions. A watt is the amount of energy you use when you lift one kilogram 1 meter into the air in 1 second. The SETI institute focused a big system of telescopes on the star on the night of Sunday August 28, 2016 and planned and focused the system of telescopes on the same star the next day. Scientists haven’t unraveled the secret yet. They hope to find the answer but it is also likely that we may never find out.
